TOURNAMENT NOTES January - March 2008
|
3/29/07 DYP: Teammates Scott Cheney & Andy McDonald drew each other in tonight's DYP. They
moved through the winners bracket taking 1st Place in the one-match final. Scott & Andy are
excellent players individually and have now really gelled as a team. John Lynn & Cleve Orso came
in 2nd. That makes back-to-back 2nd Place finishes for Cleve this week and he took 1st Place in last
Saturday's Draw. Great foosin' Cleve!
3/27/08 Open Doubles: Five in a row! Tonight marked David Chancey & Bill Shields 5th consecutive
Open Doubles win. They were momentarily stunned when they got dipped. It was the first time they
lost a match since February 14th. Unbelievable! They were down 1-0 in the first game of the second
set before the magic came back. They convincingly won the next 2 games for the match and 1st
Place. Congratulations David & Bill! This team has dominated Mobile foosball for over 4 months.
They've won 14 out of the past 20 Open Doubles tournaments. Wow!! I feel a bounty coming on. Side
note - Cleve Orso played great tonight. Sorry I let you down partner.
3/22/08 DYP: First Place went to Cleve Orso & Rob Moore in tonight's Draw. Billy Ray Thomas &
Scott Cheney dipped them in the finals, but Cleve's excellent blocking held off the double-dip. In game
2 of the second set, Cleve & Rob were down 2-0. Cleve put that wall back up and scored 2 points
from the back to tie it up and keep them alive. Awesome playing!
3/20/08 Open Doubles: There they go again! David Chancey & Bill Shields took 1st Place without
losing a match. That's 4 in a row. David couldn't make last week's Open Doubles tournament so their
streak continued tonight. Great teamwork, great foosin'! Rookie Boogie Ayers came in 2nd after a
upset win. Nice blocking partner! See y'all Saturday!
3/15/08: Like everyone else in the region, we took the night off due to the $3500 in Slidell. A few
showed up to play some games which was a lot of fun. We'll be back at it Thursday night with Open
Doubles.
3/13/08 Open Doubles: Steve Glidewell & Rob Moore were tonight's winners taking 1st Place in a
1-match final. John Lynn & Andy McDonald fought their way back from an early round loss to finish in
2nd. They beat a Pro team on the way to the finals in one of the night's upsets. The second upset
came at the hands of Scott Cheney & Fred Wilson. They put out a strong Pro/Semi-Pro team and
finished in 4th Place. Congrats players! It was great to see long-time fooser Ron Hardin back at the
tables. Work has kept him away for a few months. Welcome home Ron!
3/8/08 DYP: Bill Shields is working on all kinds of winning streaks. He's 3 for 3 so far this month,
he's won 3 consecutive Open Doubles and with tonight's win, back-to-back DYPs. Way to go Bill! He
and partner John Lynn got dipped, but then came back to win in the 2nd match of the finals. Good
foosin' guys!
3/6/08 Open Doubles: Awesome night! Great turnout, chronic foosball and an all-around good time.
David Chancey & Bill Shields are on another rampage winning their 3rd consecutive Open Doubles
tournament. This team dominated the night. David hammered one pull shot after another. He was
unstoppable. His precision unorthodox passing frustrated opposing forwards & his power shots left
goalies baffled. David's game is something to be witnessed. I've been playing on and off for over 30
years and I don't think there's a goalie on the Gulf Coast that can stop him right now. I know I
watched my share of pull shots go by. What am I saying?? You can't see them - you just hear them. It
sounds like a shotgun blast. Precision, speed and power. David's got it going on. To add insult to
injury, teammate Bill Shields is a solid goalie with threatening shooting skills and a smart defense.
They're proving themselves unbeatable. John Lynn & Rookie partner Fred Wilson had an impressive
night as well. They were outranked, but not outplayed on their way to a 3rd Place finish. Thad Meeks
& Andy De Paola came in 4th finishing ahead of several power teams. The overall level of play is
getting better & better in Mobile. Thanks for such a great night foosers! It was a blast!
3/1/08 DYP: Billy Ray Thomas & Bill Shields took 1st Place tonight in a long 2-match, 6-game Finals.
Hattiesburg's Bobby Sims & our own Daryl Perry were the challengers. They won the first match 2-1
and then 5-0'ed Billy Ray & Bill in the first game of match 2. Billy Ray & Bill took control of the next
game winning convincingly. Game 3 was a battle. Billy Ray & Bill played catch-up until it was tied at
4 a piece. We all gathered around the table to watch the last ball of this grueling 6-game final. We
simultaneously leaned forward as Bill caught a pass & set up his pull shot only to watch a 3 mile an
hour miscue somehow split Bobby's men. It was still a great match guys. Thanks to Bobby for making
the drive. It was real good to see him foosin' at The Whiskey again.
2/28/08 Open Doubles: David Chancey & Bill Shields were the winners tonight making it 2 in a row.
Have they started another winning streak? Their previous run lasted 8 weeks! Great playing guys!
David's awesome pull shot & smart shot selections are making this team harder and harder to beat.
Thanks for another good turnout everyone! And a special thanks to the Ocean Springs players for
making the drive.
2/23/08 Open DYP: The double-dip came into play tonight with Daryl Perry & myself taking 1st Place.
We had a rough start losing our first match of the night, but then somehow made our way through the
loser's bracket & landed on top in the 5-game, 2-set Finals.
2/21/08 Open Doubles: David & Bill are back on top! David Chancey & Bill Shields won tonight's
Open Doubles in a one match final against Andy McDonald & myself. Great foosin' guys! We added
another player tonight - Florida fooser Kam Morgan. Welcome to tournament foos Kam!
2/16/08 DYP: We had another good turnout with a lot of tough competition. Daryl Perry & Scott
Cheney proved to be the night's best team taking 1st Place in the one-match final. Randy Ivey & Cleve
Orso placed second. Scott & Daryl were the only team to beat them in the tournament. Billy Miller &
Billy Ray Thomas rounded out the top 3. We had a lot of pick-up games during & after the tournament.
It was a good night for foosin'.
2/14/08 Open Doubles: Has another streak started? Steve Glidewell & myself won tonight making it 2
in a row as a team. Daryl Perry & John Lynn didn't make it easy. They fought all the way back from a
first round loss and dipped us in match one of the finals. Daryl & John were on a roll. They had just
put out a Pro team before spanking us in that first match. Steve & I found ourselves down 1-0 before
we caught some lucky breaks in the deciding match. Great playing Daryl & John! Cleve Orso &
partner Fred Wilson had a great night as well. They were the team that put Daryl & John in the losers
bracket and then almost beat them again later in the night playing for 3rd Place or better. This
Amateur-Rookie team has improved by leaps and bounds. Impressive play guys! Thad Meeks brought
a new fooser to the tournament - Lee McDonald. It's good to have you foosin' with us Lee!
2/9/08 DYP: Billy Miller & Billy Ray Thomas won tonight's DYP. They made a really good team. Billy is
playing some great foos and we all know what an awesome goalie Billy Ray is. They moved right on
through the winner's bracket & took the finals in one match. Second place went to newcomer Leslie
Barnes & partner Bill Shields. Leslie is a good fooser from Milton, FL. Scott Cheney & John Dickerson
took 3rd Place. John's game has come a long way in the short time he's been playing at The Whiskey.
This guy's got a nice push kick from the back.
2/7/08 Open Doubles: Steve Glidewell won his 2nd Open Doubles tournament in a row tonight. His
wins were with 2 different partners so we'll all have to decide if we want to count Open Doubles
winning streaks individually or just as a team. Scott Cheney & Daryl Perry finished in 2nd place. They
beat the team favored to win not once but twice putting them out of the tournament. We had a really
good field of competition tonight including Billy Miller & Randy Ivey. Great tournament foosers!
2/2/08 DYP: Improving on his 3rd place finish earlier in the week, Thad Meeks won tonight's DYP
with a double-dip. Great foosin' partner! We had to scrap all night to stay alive. It wasn't pretty, but it
paid off at the end. We had several new players tonight. Bill Shields brought his brother Joseph and
friend Jeremy Bliss. A couple of good Mississippi foosers showed up as well - Andy McDonald and
Jared Lott. It's been great to have new players join in the fun at The Whiskey. Welcome to Mobile
Foos guys!
1/31/08 Open Doubles: David Chancey & Bill Shields' 8-game winning streak came to an abrupt end
tonight at the hands of Rob Moore & Steve Glidewell. Rob & Steve won the $40.00 bonus bounty cash
put up by Billy Ray Thomas. It was good to see these Pros playing again. Rob's smooth 5-row kept
feeding his lightning fast pull shot. Awesome playing Rob. Steve is primarily a forward, but played an
excellent goalie tonight. David & Bill have set the bar: 8 consecutive Open Doubles tournament wins.
It was an impressive run. Can this record be matched? Or better yet - can this record be broken?
Congratulations to both teams! Thad Meeks & Andy De Paola placed a notable third. This
Semi-Pro/Rookie team had to beat some tough competition along the way. Great playing guys!
1/26/08 DYP: Tonight's winners were decided in a tough-fought 6 game final. The teams were Randy
Ivey & Bill Shields sitting in the winners bracket with Thad Meeks & Billy Ray Thomas as the
challengers. Thad & Billy Ray squeezed one in on blood ball, blood game to win the first match. The
battle continued in the second match with Randy & Bill winning the first game. Thad & Billy Ray found
themselves down 4-2 in the second game, but stayed alive scoring the next point to make it 4-3. The
next ball was the longest played ball I had ever personally witnessed in which Billy Ray showcased
his talent holding off numerous attempts by both Bill & Randy giving Thad the opportunity to tie the
match. Randy & Bill went on to win game 3 escaping the double-dip. Great finals guys! On a side
note, it was real good to see Randy & Billy Miller. We appreciate the Florida support!
REMINDER: $40.00 Bounty Bonus this Thursday! Details below.
1/24/08 Open Doubles: David Chancey & Bill Shields won again tonight making it 8 straight Open
Doubles wins. This team has not lost since November 22, 2007. It's been a great run for them, but it
has pissed off Billy Ray Thomas to the point that he has put a $40.00 bounty on their heads. Any team
who wins this Thursday night's tournament, other than David & Bill, will get a $40.00 bonus -
compliments of Billy Ray.
1/19/08 DYP: Scott Cheney won his first tournament since his return to foosball. He & partner John
Lynn didn't lose a match all night. Scott was an excellent player years ago & those skills are coming
back. As a lot of us know, it takes a while to dust off your game. Kevin Buckley was in town. He was
one of our regulars before his move to Metairie, LA. It was good to see you at the tables again Kevin.
Andy De Paola brought another out-of-town fooser - Bill Allen from Athens, GA. This guy loves foosball
and took 3rd Place in the tournament. Good playing partner! Andy's friend Raymond was back for his
last tournament before returning to St. Louis. It was nice foosing with both of you. Have a safe trip
home guys! Andy placed second tonight with partner Daryl Perry. His game is really improving as he
edges closer to Amateur status.
1/17/08 Open Doubles: David Chancey & Bill Shields continued their winning streak taking 1st Place
in January's third Open Doubles tournament. Congrats once again guys! Rookie Fred Wilson is
coming on strong. He and partner Daryl Perry put out a Pro-Amateur team on their way to 3rd Place.
Andy De Paola brought a player visiting from St. Louis, MO - Raymond Chee. He seemed to have a
good time with us southern foosers. Enjoy your stay in Mobile Raymond!
1/12/08 DYP: Bill Shields went 2 for 2 this week winning tonight's Draw with Mississippi fooser
Rusty Comeaux. Bill double-dipped his opponents in both of this week's events. He's won 3 out of 4
so far this month. Way to go Bill! (Side note - This was the third double-dip in a row. We only had 2
double-dips in the entire month of December!) It was great to see the Mississippi gang again. This
time they brought Danny Olier, Rusty and their better halves with them. We really appreciate y'all
coming. Hope to see ya next week. It was also good to see newcomer John Dickerson again. He was
a fooser many years ago. Bill recently got him back into the game. Welcome back to foos John!
1/10/08 Open Doubles: Rookie-Amateur team Fred Wilson & Cleve Orso put David Chancey & Bill
Shields in the losers bracket right off the bat. David & Bill have become Mobile's best doubles team
so this was no small feat. Great match guys! David & Bill fought back to win the tournament with a
double-dip. Fred & Cleve finished a respectable third.
1/5/08 DYP: Thad Meeks put up a wall against some of Mobile's best forwards. I can't remember the
last time I saw so many attempted 3-row shots! Thad & partner John Lynn won the night in fine
fashion with a double-dip. Awesome defense Thad! Great shooting too!
1/3/08 Open Doubles: Keeping their winning momentum going, David Chancey & Bill Shields won the
first tournament of 2008. They got dipped, but would not be denied in the second match of the finals. It
was nice to see Mississippi foosers Chuck Weathers, Stan Soles and Ben Bullot again. Their games
have really improved since their last visit. Chuck & Stan took 3rd place.
